 George Liscomb Weaver, age 92, a long-time resident of Birmingham, died peacefully on December 15, 2012 at Sunrise of Bloomfield Assisted Living. He was born May 28, 1920, in Detroit, to George W. Weaver and Della A. Liscomb. On June 21, 1945 he married Mary Eleanor Doane and together they raised five daughters. George was a graduate of Detroit Cooley High School and attended Detroit Business College. He used his business skills at Borg Warner International in the Free Press Building, Massey Ferguson Sherman Tractor Company and Fuel Sales Company, before his final place of employment at General Motors Technical Center. At GM he worked in the Design Department and later in the Environment Safety Division where he monitored Chevrolet vehicles during initial testing of automobile air bags.
George had a gift and passion for music. He loved to play the piano and share his talent with others, even in his final years. Many of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have become musicians because of his influence. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Detroit and the First Baptist Church of Birmingham where he sang in the choir and played piano. He was an active member of the Birmingham Senior Men’s Club and past president of the Detroit Baptist Children’s Home, now known as the Judson Center, in Royal Oak. He loved to garden and share his produce and flowers. It was said that, “George could make anything grow!” As a boy, his mother took him and his brother to her knitting classes. To keep the boys from being bored, the instructor also taught them to knit. In his later years, he knit many gifts for family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and baseball and was an avid Tiger’s fan!
George truly was a people person. His amazing optimism, friendliness, contentment, zest for life and faith in God were an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed!
George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary, his brothers, Alvin Weaver, Leroy Weaver and Charles Lynds and sister, Ruth Weaver. He is survived by his five daughters, Rachel Baumann (Billy), Laura Sala (Edward), Martha McNinch (Dale), Sara Weaver and Carol Weaver (Jeff Haskill); nine grandchildren, Dianne Bowman (Scott), Michael McNinch (Katherine), Marianne Janson (Daniel), Rebecca Baumann (Chetan Bhardwaj), Benjamin Baumann (Shannon), Matthew Baumann, Lindsay Hawkins, Leland Hawkins and Rose Hawkins; and nine great-grandchildren, Lauren, Megan and Ashley Bowman, Michael and William Banks McNinch, and Patrick, George, Wesley and James Janson.
Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday 3-8pm. A Funeral Service will take place at First Baptist Church of Birmingham, 300 Willits, Birmingham, Saturday 10am. Burial will follow in Oakview Cemetery, Royal Oak.
