Matthew P. DeWitt
June 15, 1985 - July 21, 2012
Matthew P. DeWitt of Atlantic Beach, Florida, and Troy, Michigan, died suddenly July 21, 2012. He was 27 years old. Matthew was born June 15, 1985, in Detroit, to Marilyn (nee Henry) and Stephen DeWitt.

A 2003 graduate of Brother Rice High School, Matthew went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Dayton. In July 2008, Matthew began serving his country in the United States Coast Guard and had reached the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He was stationed in Hawaii and most recently in Jacksonville, Florida.

Matthew possessed an adventurous spirit; he enjoyed travelling and loved his job in the Coast Guard. He was also an Eagle Scout and a natural athlete. Always active, he enjoyed golf, fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. A fun-loving person in every way, Matthew loved to eat and laugh and enjoy life with those he loved. A devoted son, brother, nephew, and friend, he was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his parents, Marilyn and Stephen, and siblings, Katie, Jennifer, and Nate. He is also survived by his grandmother, Marion DeWitt and several aunts and uncles. Matthew is preceded in death by his brother, Andrew.

Dr and Mrs. DeWitt, family and fellow friends, For about 10 years Matt and I were pretty inseperatable. You didn't have to wait long to see one of us close behind the other. Few people mattered more to me or had a bigger impact on my decisions and development as a teen. I treasure the memories I share with Matt. We were always playing games or sports or building forts. We hadn't stayed in touch as well as either of us would have planned, but my pain still feels like I lost one of my best friends or family members. I live in Birmingham now, please let me know if there is anything I can do. My sincere condolences, Ryan

Dear DeWitt Family-- My heart goes out to you at this terrible time. I was lucky enough to know Matt when we were little as he was a classmate of my brother Elliott. When all three of us went on to college at U of Dayton we were able to get to know one another better. He was my neighbor Junior year and I will never forget the fun we had together. He was an amazingly kind person who wore his heart on his sleeve. He will be greatly missed. My prayers are with you all.

Dearest Marilyn, Stephen, Katie, Jenny and Nate~ What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why Matt left this earth so soon, or why he left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that he died, but that he lived. And that his life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. Our thoughts, love and prayers are with you all during this very difficult time. Know, that you are loved by us and so very, very many others. ~Mary Anne, Derek and Sammy

Dear DeWitt Family, I did not know you nor your son, but I was on duty at JAX International Airport the day your son was to make his final journey home to Michigan. I knew a Coast Guard member had passed away and I stayed after my shift to ensure everything went smoothly with the Delta flight, and to pay my respects. I didn't know about your son yet. My boyfriend is in the Coast Guard and told me about the email they had received regarding the loss of your son. I just want to express my deepest sympathies for your loss and offer my love, thoughts, and prayers to your family. May God bless you all at this difficult time, and may you find some comfort in knowing that there are those of us who care and are grateful for his service to our country. With humble regards,

As we watched the photo tribute that Nate and Brian put together for Matt that showed memories of wonderful and happy times, it was so very clear that Matt was raised in a loving and supportive family and he experienced a life full of love, purpose, great friends, and many accomplishments on his way to becoming a man who honorably served our country. Thank you for sharing Matt with all of us – that grin of his will be forever in our memories. Rest well, Matt. You are loved. Barbara & Christophe Dean & Family

To the Dewitt's, I had the opportunity of spending a lot of time with your son in Hawaii while stationed aboard CGC RUSH, providing mentoring, leadership and life experiences with your son. He spent a lot of time with myself and ETC Cabel at the beach going skin diving and we talked about many things as in life goals, family and expectations. He was an amazing young man, he had a great attitude serving his country and had a tight knit family whom he loved dearly. This is a huge blow to not just the Dewitt Family, but also to the CG Family that has known Matthew and that have shed blood, sweat and tears together. We will miss his smile, his can do attitude and his little smart A$$ remarks. He was a great Coastguardsman and person of the community. I know we can't bring Matthew back, but I just wanted to tell you how much your son meant to not just you, but to the Coast Guard men and women that he impacted by providing true and genuine friendship. He would never ever let anyone down! My hearts goes out to you, your family and Matthew. May he rest in peace and god bless to all of you.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I taught Matt in Physical Education at Brother Rice and he was a fine young man. I'm just getting back to school after summer vacation and haven't checked my e-mail in weeks and was very saddened to learn about this today. Not sure you will receive this because of the lateness but know that he will be missed and that I have prayed for the repose of his soul and for your strength at this time of grief and sorrow.

I went to Coast Guard boot camp with Matthew. He was one of the first few that helped me out with issues I had during training. He was very upbeat and overall a wonderful person that I'm proud to say I got to know well. He's certainly missed and will never be forgotten.
